Camp Kessem provides support and life-changing experiences for children who have a parent with cancer.
Camp Kesem is a summer camp for kids ages 6-16 that have a parent who has, previously had, or has died from cancer. CK is intended to give the kids an escape from the everyday struggle and burden that impacts families dealing with a parent’s cancer, but also provides access to a community and year-round support system for the kids and their parents. Many of the kids at camp (especially those with younger siblings) have taken on the role and responsibility of a parent, and camp gives them a week to just be a kid. The camp is managed by a national board, but is organized, funded, and run exclusively by college students at UNC and Duke. Finally, fundraising is far and away the most pressing need for the camp; camp is free to attend, as many of the families are financially burdened by the costs associated with cancer treatment, so each counselor is required to meet an individual fundraising goal that pays for one kid’s week at camp. However, each year there are kids who apply that aren’t able to attend due to lack of funding; every additional $500 allows CKNC to accept one more kid, so the money donated by Barnstock, however much, would have a profound and visible positive impact.
